Industrial zones occupy large areas of land and can contribute significantly to pollution and industrial risk. UNEP TIE, together with collaborating organizations have developed guidelines for environmentally sensitive planning of new industrial estates, and also environmentally enhanced operation of those estates already in existence. Another area of importance is the implementation of environmental management tools such as assessments, audits, environmental reports and environmental management systems (EMS), for industrial estates.
This page provides links to collaborating organizations in the issues outlined above. It also contains a link to the Eight actions to improve environmental performance of your industrial estate.... A number of links to publications on this topic is also given.
EnTA  [More Info] "Environmental technology assessment (EnTA) is a process where the environmental aspects of a technology are systematically examined and described. The program's goal is to encourage the assessment of use of technologies from an environmental perspective." Detail description of EnTA is given in the next topic. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) (http://www.unepie.org/ipman/eia.html) UNEP has commenced a project to help senior managers in industry to better understand the principle aspects of EIA and provide up-to-date advice on how to better manage and use the EIA process in their companies. This program examines the linkages of EIA with other environment management tools and the identification of training needs for EIA. This will lead to a better assimilation of EIA into the industry.
These issues are examined by an expert workshop to be held in Paris in early December 1998. The proceedings will be published by UNEP in 1999.
Management of Contaminated Land (http://www.unepie.org/ipman/land.html) The objective of this site is to create greater awareness in the issue of contaminated land in developing economies, and provide simplified methodologies and procedures for identifying and dealing with contaminated land. This site gives an outline of its activity and also gives links to publications relating to this topic. Environmental Content in Professional Tertiary Education (http://www.unepie.org/ipman/educ.html) Objective of activity: "Improvement in the environmental awareness, understanding and skills of future industrial engineers and other professionals.
